Health Insurance in Michigan — Options for Individuals, Families & the Self-Employed
Daniel Posey · Michigan · Updated August 2026 · 5 min read
Michigan built the modern skilled trade, and today a huge share of Michiganders still work for themselves — contractors and builders, automotive suppliers and engineers turned consultants, small manufacturers, and a growing remote-work crowd from Detroit to Grand Rapids to Traverse City. Most face the same question every fall: is my health plan actually the right one?
I'm Daniel Posey, an independent licensed health insurance broker (NPN 20609967), licensed in Michigan. I compare plans across multiple carriers — Marketplace and private — and my help costs you nothing, because carriers pay broker commissions, not clients.
The Michigan Health Insurance Landscape
Michigan uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Through the Healthy Michigan Plan, the state's Medicaid expansion, adults earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level qualify — no coverage gap.
Above that line, premium tax credits are still available, but the enhanced subsidies expired at the end of 2025. The good news: Michigan has one of the more competitive individual insurance markets in the Midwest, with strong carrier participation.
Who Benefits Most from Working with a Broker in Michigan
Michigan's independent workforce is deep and varied. My typical clients:
- Self-employed professionals and 1099 contractors — builders, engineers, IT consultants, realtors, and tradespeople
- Small business owners across metro Detroit, Grand Rapids, and the west side of the state
- Families above the subsidy sweet spot facing full-price Marketplace premiums
- Early retirees — a big group in Michigan — bridging the years before Medicare
Michigan has real carrier competition — which means the savings are there if somebody actually compares. Most people never do.
Your Realistic Options in Michigan
- ACA Marketplace plans — the right fit if you qualify for premium tax credits or need guaranteed-issue coverage for pre-existing conditions.
- Private medically underwritten plans — often meaningfully cheaper for healthy applicants who don't qualify for subsidies.
- Small group coverage — worth exploring if your business has at least one W-2 employee besides you.
- Supplemental coverage — accident, critical illness, dental, and vision plans that round out a high-deductible plan.
Getting Covered in Michigan — What to Expect
We start with a short phone call. I ask about your household, income, doctors, and prescriptions, then compare what's actually available to you — in plain English, with real numbers. If a plan makes sense, I can usually get you enrolled the same week. And if your current plan is already your best option, I'll tell you that too.
